Why consider couples therapy/relationship counselling?

Even strong relationships face challenges. Couples therapy or relationship counselling offers a safe space to improve communication, rebuild trust, and deepen connection. Whether you're facing conflict or just want to strengthen your bond, professional guidance can help you grow together.

Which one do you need? Couples therapy vs. Relationship counselling

1

COUPLES THERAPY

  • chronic issues in the relationship

  • mental health concerns impacting the relationship

  • repeated conflicts (aka "gridlock")

  • emotional disconnection

  • attachment patterns or personality clashes

  • trauma or abuse (if safe to address as a couple)

  • tends to be more structured, intensive, and longer-term

2

RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLING

  • improve communication skills

  • conflict resolution

  • intimacy or sexual issues

  • life transitions + challenges with decision making

  • clarifying future goals

  • everyday challenges

  • tends to be more goal-oriented, practical, and shorter- to medium-term

conflict resolution therapy

When should you consider conflict resolution counselling?

If disagreements often escalate or never get resolved, conflict resolution counselling can help. Unlike standard couples therapy, it focuses specifically on managing disputes—teaching practical tools to navigate differences calmly and constructively. It’s ideal when conflict is the main barrier to connection.

Evidence-based approach to couples and relationship therapy

At Hera Therapy, we use evidence-based methods that have been proven effective in helping couples navigate a wide range of challenges. Every couple is unique, so the therapeutic approach is always tailored to fit your specific needs, goals, and relationship dynamics—ensuring the support you receive is both practical and meaningful.

Our talented, trained, and experienced therapists offer two types of world-renowned modalities of couples therapy: Gottman Method Couples Therapy and  Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy (PACT). Learn more about the difference between these approaches below and we will help you find your best fit.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy

Based on over 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the Gottman Method helps couples build:

  • Fondness & admiration

  • Effective conflict resolution

  • Shared goals and values

  • Lasting emotional connection

You’ll learn practical skills for managing conflict, enhancing friendship, and building a relationship that lasts.

Key Components:

  • Love Maps (knowing your partner’s inner world)

  • The Four Horsemen (identifying and replacing harmful behaviors)

  • Repair Attempts

  • Building Rituals of Connection

PACT: Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy

PACT is a cutting-edge method developed by Dr. Stan Tatkin. It blends attachment theory, neuroscience, and arousal regulation to help couples develop secure-functioning relationships.

PACT helps couples:

  • Recognize and shift unconscious relational patterns

  • Develop a secure, mutual dependency

  • Respond calmly under stress and conflict

  • Promote true emotional safety

PACT sessions are often more experiential, engaging couples in real-time interactions that reveal their core dynamics and help shift them effectively.

Relational Life Therapy (RLT)

Relational Life Therapy (RLT) is a dynamic, results-oriented approach that helps individuals and couples create more honest, connected, and fulfilling relationships.

Rather than focusing only on insight, RLT emphasizes meaningful change—helping you identify unhelpful patterns, take accountability, and develop healthier ways of relating.

RLT therapists will help you explore how past experiences shape present behaviours, while building the skills needed for clear communication, emotional resilience, and mutual respect. Whether you’re struggling with conflict, disconnection, or feeling stuck in recurring cycles, RLT offers a direct, compassionate path toward deeper intimacy and lasting change.

Eclectic Approach to Couples Therapy

An eclectic approach to couples therapy recognizes that no two relationships are the same. Rather than relying on a single method, this flexible style of therapy draws from a range of evidence-based approaches to meet the unique needs, strengths, and challenges of each couple.

Together, we tailor the work to you—integrating tools for communication, emotional connection, conflict resolution, and deeper understanding. This allows us to respond in the moment to what’s most important, whether that’s rebuilding trust, navigating life transitions, or breaking out of recurring patterns. The goal is to create a therapy experience that feels relevant, practical, and deeply attuned to your relationship.
